World Humanitarian Day: The History & What You Can Do to Celebrate it

On the 19th of August, we celebrate World Humanitarian Day, a day honouring the work of humanitarians all over the world!

As humans, we all need compassion and support from each other. A little kindness towards others goes a long way.

World Humanitarian Day was declared an as an annual international day in 2009 to commemorate the brave and selfless humanitarians who risked their lives to help those affected by the bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Bagdad, Iraq on August 19th, 2003.

Amongst the 22 brave Aid workers who were killed was Sergio Vieira de Mello, a Brazilian chief humanitarian who spent his entire life helping others who were affected by man-made disasters.

Since 2009, each year celebrates a theme honouring those Aid workers and social workers who continue to show compassion towards humanity today by risking their lives for the safety and security of those in need. Despite the recent and ongoing pandemic, there are thousands of people around the world who lend a helping hand to those in poverty stricken areas and those affected by disasters.

“Services to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth”

So, how can you be a true hero and celebrate World Humanitarian Day in simple, meaningful ways?

Help out in your own community.

Identify the areas in your community who are in need of a helping hand, whether it is food, clothes, or sanitary items. Take a few hours out of your day to visit these areas and provide them with what they need.

Donate to charity.

Research a few charities that support courses that you are passionate about and donate an amount of your choice.

Sign up for voluntary work.

There are many opportunities to volunteer and help out somewhere, maybe at a nursing home, a church, or an orphanage.

Choose to be a true hero whenever and wherever you can. Your help may look small, but means a great deal to those who need it the most!

Happy World Humanitarian month!
