  • The Month of Fasting & Forgiveness: The Origins and Health Benefits of Ramadan | blakINwite

Magazine > Trending News The Month of Fasting & Forgiveness: The Origins and Health Benefits of Ramadan Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar. Ramadan is the most important month of the year for Muslims as it marks the period in which the angel Gabriel appeared to the Prophet Mohammed Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH) on the night of Laylat Al Qadar and revealed to him the Holy Qur’an. The month of Ramadan has since been celebrated by Muslims to commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an. When is Ramadan? The Islamic calendar is shorter than the Gregorian calendar and so Ramadan begins 10-12 days earlier each year. The beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon and lasts 29-30 days until the sighting of next crescent moon. This year, Ramadan is expected to last from Monday, April 12 to Tuesday, May 11. The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid ul Fitr, a three-day festival where friend and family come together to celebrate and exchange gifts. What do Muslims do in Ramadan? Ramadan, observed by Muslims all over the world is known to be a month of reflection and growth, modesty, and empathy. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to fast and practice self-restraint between sunrise and sunset. Fasting includes refraining from food and drink, sexual activity, and all forms of immoral behaviors and language. Fasting during Ramadan is an obligation for all Muslims except for pregnant or menstruating women, people who are ill, the elderly or those who are traveling. Missed days can be made up for during the year. Fasting is a shield, so the one who fasts should avoid obscene speech and ignorant behavior. If someone abuses him or starts to fight with him, he should reply by saying: ‘I am fasting. I am fasting’. – Saheeh Al Bukhari, A companion of the Prophet Mohammed Health benefits of Ramadan backed up science: Dates It is a customary tradition for Muslims to break their fast by eating three dates at Iftar (At Sunset). Consuming dates has many health benefits and provides the right amount of carbohydrates after fasting. Dates are high in fibre to support during Ramadan and they are also a good source of potassium, magnesium and vitamin B. There is no doubt that dates are among the healthiest fruits and super foods. Fasting improves brain function and reduces stress levels. Did you know that fasting can improve concentration and brain power? Fasting signals, the brain to increase its natural growth factor which supports the growth of brain cells, thus improving brain function. Also, fasting signals the adrenal glands to produce less cortisol levels which means stress levels are reduced. Detox Fasting during Ramadan undoubtedly serves as a spiritual detox but it also serves to cleanse our bodies. Fasting allows the digestive system to detoxify and take a break from digestion. Going long hours without eating also means that our metabolism increases and our bodies improve absorption of nutrients from food . Ramadan Dictionary: Sawm: Fasting Salah: Prayer. Muslims pray five times a day. Taraweeh: Additional prayers offered at night during Ramadan. Iftar: At sunset, fasting is broken with a meal called Iftar. Suhoor: An early morning meal eaten before sunrise. Zakat: Charitable giving. Back to Magazine

Magazine > Influential Women MacKenzie Scott, Ex-Wife of Jeff Bezos, Shows Greats Generosity through her Philanthropic Approach What good is all the money in the world if you won’t be using it to make an impact or contribute to change in the lives of those in need? MacKenzie Scott, the world’s third richest woman, has been using her wealth to contribute towards the greater good. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty...” MacKenzie’s Contributions: MacKenzie Scott has generously contributed to various activist groups, educational, religious and environmental organizations. • Ahoo Beauty, Bringing Confidence to her Clients through Professional Makeup and Fashion Style Coaching | blakINwite

Magazine > Interview Ahoo Beauty, Bringing Confidence to her Clients through Professional Makeup and Fashion Style Coaching "The little secret about art is that it’s like an ocean: It never ends. Creativity is the key to standing out and showing your own personality and style in every little detail, whether it’s in makeup, fashion, or painting." - Ahoo Beauty Ahoo, an entrepreneur, makeup artist, and fashion style coach based in Dubai has always had a love for all things art! From drawing and painting to jewelry and fashion designing, creativity has always been a part of her since childhood. Born in Kuwait, Ahoo took most of her inspiration from her parents growing up, who taught her a lot about art and business. With her dad being in the gold-manufacturing business, he would often design a few jewelry pieces himself. Ahoo would watch him draw and he would encourage her to design a few pieces herself and share her ideas for kids jewelry. She later enrolled in art school where her passion for art grew, and completed an architecture course at university. Ahoo’s journey in fashion, styling, and makeup began when she attended a fashion design school in Dubai. She went on to say, “While attending fashion design college, I worked at my mother’s real estate company. I admired her success as a business woman and began learning more about business. During this time, I also worked as a part-time artist with Italian artist, Luchi. We painted art on the walls of royal houses and shopping malls!” recalled Ahoo. Ambitiously, Ahoo enrolled in a few makeup and style coaching courses. After gaining much experience, she began her entrepreneurial journey in fashion styling and makeup. “I started it on Instagram and was lucky to get connected with some Arab celebrities and royal families from Kuwait and the UAE” she shared. What Ahoo enjoys most about her business is seeing the joy her makeup brings to her clients. She went on to say, “I love sharing happiness and doing makeup for brides and others gives me the best feeling. Seeing the smile on their faces is the best gift to my soul!” Ahoo also aims to bring confidence to her clients with bespoke clothing designs. “When it comes to styling my clients, I see it as a personal project. I need to read into their minds and personalities to design a style suited to them. Designing is not one size fits all” shared Ahoo, “Also, I aim to see one thing in their eyes, and that is confidence. Once I see this, I know I did a good job!” The creative entrepreneur shared that her secret to attracting and keeping her clients lay in always putting her heart and soul into what she does and meeting their expectations. She went on to say, “I thank God that I’ve never had unhappy clients. Call it luck or call it a blessing, but I know that you get what you put out. The energy we have inside us is what we attract. Creativity is just a bonus!” Ahoo is also excited to share that she is currently in the process of creating her own skincare and beauty line! While launch day has not been confirmed yet, she is working hard at achieving this next goal and reaching her business to greater heights! The challenging and best parts about Ahoo’s entrepreneurial journey Although her biggest goal has always been to run her own business, transitioning into the entrepreneurial world has had its challenging moments. Being quite the reserved person growing up, getting people to believe in her passion and work without advertising has been what Ahoo described as “a lot of work.” She went on to say, “I’ve always just wanted my work to speak for itself instead of me advertising and speaking about my work.” Ahoo also shares that her daily challenges as a full time entrepreneur is being a mom of two kids. However, she takes pride in the fact that her kids can watch and learn from her, just like how her own mom raised her as a kid. “I’ve always wanted to run my own business. My mom taught me to be my own boss so that was my biggest goal to achieve and to not give up, so my kids can learn the same.” shared Ahoo. Her favorite part about what she does is experimenting with different colors and getting creative which allows her mind to keep exploring and learning. She also loves that she can help others with the work that she does. Our Favorite Questions Do you have any business/entrepreneurial advice to share with women aspiring to startup their own business one day? “Pray and believe in yourself and your God. He created us and I believe each and every person can do anything they want only if they really want to. Our thoughts are our only limitation that can make us believe that we can’t do it, or ‘I’m too young or I’m too old.’ You need to believe in yourself, set achievable goals, and take little steps. Once you take first steps, set another goal and start finding ways to achieve it. Don’t work just for income, work because you love to do what you do. Start from your home or whatever you have around you or within you, and you will soon start earning an income from it.” What do you enjoy doing in your free time? “I smile now just by thinking about it! I love horseback riding, painting, and having quality time with my family are always my favorite. I’ve been doing horseback riding since I was a kid and it instantly connected with my soul. I think horses are one of the most beautiful animals in the world.” Is there anything else you would like to share? “Something I always love to say is to have consistency in all that you do. Whatever you start doing, make sure you have peace with yourself so that you start planning with a clear mind. Writing it down is very important. If you’re unsure of what you want to do, make a list of the things that you like and mark the one you love doing the most. If your heart feels right about doing something, find ways to gain knowledge around that subject. There are millions of online free courses that you can learn from! Follow your dreams and don’t stop, no matter what!” 1/1 Back to Magazine

Inspired by professional tennis players, Venus and Serena Williams, Naomi’s father began training his two daughters at a very young age in the sport. The Osaka family relocated to Florida when Naomi was just eight years old, where she and her sister would have better opportunities to train. Naomi spent her daytime hours practicing tennis on the Pembroke Pines public courts in Florida, and was homeschooled at night. Naomi’s victories as a teenager ranked her into the top 250 of that season. • Maryan Ibrahim: Turning Dream Homes into a Reality | blakINwite

Magazine > Interview Maryan Ibrahim: Turning Dream Homes into a Reality “The ability to help people make their homes a beautiful space to enjoy with their families and build everlasting memories is what keeps me going. My number one goal is for my clients to love their homes when the project is complete.” -Maryan Ibrahim Maryan Ibrahim, the proud founder of J Vera Interiors, an interior design company, embarked on her career journey as an elementary school teacher and later, a supervisor of special education. Born in Egypt, Maryan immigrated to the United States at the young age of 11. Her passion for interior design developed after the renovation of her own home in Central New Jersey. She went on to say, “I always loved interior decor but it wasn’t until we bought our first house and completely renovated it that I finally found my true passion in interior design.” Named after her daughter, Julianna Vera, Maryan spent five years as a stay-at-home mom before starting up J Vera Interiors. Becoming a mom of three has led to her decision to leave the education field and spend more of her time at home with her children. “While I enjoyed being a mom, I still felt a void in me,” shared Maryan, “Once I found my passion in interior design, I knew I wanted to start a business and pursue it professionally so I set a goal for myself, enrolled in design classes, started an Instagram account, and the rest is history!” The interior design of her own home reflects her personal designing style. She went on to say, “I consider my personal design style to be transitional. I like to mix modern elements with some traditional furnishings to keep a room from looking too much of one particular style,” shared Maryan, “I like to blend interior design styles to create balance, warmth, and a relaxed feel in a home. My own home reflects that.” Many people draw their inspiration and motivation from different things. For Maryan, trying new things, visiting new places, talking to new people, and changing up her routine are the things that keep her inspired and motivated. Her favorite part about designing a home is seeing the reactions on her clients faces when they see the final reveal of the project. “The ability to help people make their homes a beautiful space to enjoy with their families and build everlasting memories is what keeps me going,” shared Maryan, “My number one goal is for my clients to love their homes when the project is complete!” Maryan’s Favorite and Most Challenging Part about Entrepreneurship “My favorite part about being an entrepreneur is creating my own opportunities and destiny,” shares Maryan, “I enjoy the fact that I am my own boss, make my own decisions, and set my own rules!” Maryan shared the most challenging part about her entrepreneurial journey is balancing between her business and personal relationships. She went on to say, “Owning a business can cause severe stress and anxiety. It is hard to balance being a wife, mother, daughter, and friend.” Our Favorite Questions In your opinion, what are the top three traits every entrepreneur should have? “There are so many traits that an entrepreneur should have but I would say the top three things for me are, Vision- You have to have a clear picture of what you want your business to be and what your goals are. Confidence- As human beings it’s natural to have self-doubt, but to be an entrepreneur you have to put that aside and exude confidence. You must believe in yourself or no one else will. Persistence- What will set you apart from the rest is your ability to be persistent when you face rejection and not give up. Sticking with it when it gets hard is what will make you successful.” What advice do you have for women aspiring to start their own business one day? “Believe in yourself and go after what you want! Don’t doubt yourself. Set a goal then figure out the steps to achieve it. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. It’s ok if you fail but the most important thing is to not give up and get back up. You will have good days and bad days. Don’t let the bad outweigh the good and keep going! As women, we can be so critical of ourselves, but we have to fight hard to push that aside and have confidence in ourselves and go after what we want.” Do you have any other words of encouragement for our readers? “At the end of the day, we only have one life to live. If you are unhappy with where you are in life then do something about it and change it. Find your passion, set a goal for yourself, have confidence, work hard, and go after what you want. You have to believe in yourself and work hard. Nothing comes easy. Everything takes work.” 1/1 Back to Magazine
