Jen Winnett: Creating the Best Eco-friendly Products from Her Artistic Illustrations Inspired by Nature

"I take inspiration from nature and the world around me to create my colorful, endearing illustrations of animals and turn them into a range of Eco friendly cards, gifts, homeware and clothing." -Jen Winnet

Taking inspiration from nature and the world around her, Jen Winnett, from the tranquil Cotswold countryside in England, developed her love and passion for drawing and painting at the age of nine. She distinctly remembers sitting at her nanny’s big wooden table experimenting with water colors and mesmerized by how the colors swirled together as she learned the different techniques. Taking art classes at school, her love for it continued to grow.

Embarking her career journey in the marketing field, Jen knew she wanted more for herself than just a 9 - 5 job. She went on to say, “I really struggled with the constraints with a 9 - 5, not just creatively, but I felt like a bird in a cage,” shared Jen, “I wanted to dream bigger and better than being confined to my four office walls but when I fell ill, my recovery was the real turning point.”

Growing up with parents who both ran their own businesses, Jen has always had the entrepreneurial spirit within her and always admired the freedom and flexibility paired with the hard work. Her own entrepreneurial journey began at a very challenging time in her life, where she found that painting and drawing was her form of relaxation and escapism.

“I hit a very low point in 2015 - 2016 and was battling hard against anorexia. I was admitted into a clinic in London, and to help me relax and escape my mind, I was encouraged to paint and draw to get my emotions out on paper” shared Jen. “I hadn’t painted since school and for the first time in a long time I experienced some form of peace even if it was just for a few minutes. It was utter bliss.”

Jen described her very first pictures as ‘dark and ugly,’ however, as she regained her strength, they got better. “The first iconic picture I painted was the blue Doe and I named her Alive,” she recalled, “I shared her on social media and people asked if they could buy prints. I was completely taken aback at others wanting to have a piece of my colorful scribbles on their wall. I love how it brought as much joy to others as it did to me!”

As more and more people became interested in her animal illustrations with requests for prints on items ranging from cards, bags, and homeware, she set out on her entrepreneurial journey as an eco-artist, turning her illustrations into a range of eco-friendly products. Launching her website about four years ago, Jen had the goal to produce products as sustainably as she could.

“I branded myself as ‘The Eco-Artist’ because I really wanted to show the world that eco-friendly products can be beautiful too,” shared Jen, “My online store stocks all my carbon neutral cards made with vegetable based inks, Eco bags made from organic and fairtrade cotton, list pads made from recycled paper, chopping boards, mugs, coasters, placemats, glass lens cloths, notepads, and more!”

In addition, all orders are packaged in either recycled paper or compostable packaging. With all her products made and printed in the UK, Jen’s core value is affordability. Her product prices range from £2.85 - £25.

Within the last year, the young entrepreneur has had successful art shows around the country, with two of her biggest exhibitions being the Spirit of Christmas at Olympia in London and the Spring Fair, a trade show at the NEC. Jen went on to say, “I kept having to pinch myself as I couldn’t believe I was holding my own amongst such big brands!”
